New Movable Type product life cycle policy announced today

By Takeshi Nick Osanai.

In announcing the new policy, Six Apart’s primary goal is to help make Movable Type a safer and even more dependable product. In an effort to make it easier for our customers to keep their installed version of Movable Type up dated to the latest version of software, which provides the most effective form of protection against security threats, Six Apart has created the new “Product Life Cycle Policy.” This policy is reflected retroactively including previously released version of Movable Type as well as all subsequent upgrades and new versions. We hope the following information will be helpful in getting your version of Movable Type updated to the latest and most secure version of the software available. Product Life Cycle Milestones Below are definitions for the different lifecycle phases included in the chart below [GA (General Availability)] During the period between GA and EOS (End of Sales), security patches and bug fixes will be released on a regular basis, with official technical support available for a fee. [EOS (End of Sales)] EOS designates the closure of sales for a specific product version. Major (x.0) and feature (0.x) releases for the product version released during the GA period will start to…

Reorganizing Movable Type 5 documentations

By Takeshi Nick Osanai.

I was one of the attendees at the “Movable Type Idea Exchange in NYC” in October earlier this year, and as a speaker, I made several promises: To provide English translations of Japanese plugins To provide English translations of MT related Japanese documents To renovate the plugin directory To share knowledge, in English, on the Github wiki I introduced several Japanese plugins recently, and am currently in the process of fulfilling the rest of the promises that I made during the conference. Though it have not been perfect, but as of now, we have officially started translating documents and articles currently available on the “MovableType.jp” website for publication in English on the “MovableType.org” website. New documents are located here: http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/mt5/ Developers notes and plugins will be continue to be translated. Also, we plan on revisiting previously published MT4 related documents in order to update them with more recent screenshots and information. Finally, several articles on the Github Wiki page that were previously only available in Japanese have been translated and published in English. Little by little, we hope to bring the international MT community up to speed with what is happening on the Japan side. Stay tuned for future…

A Leading Japanese Developer’s Perspective on Movable Type

By Takeshi Nick Osanai.

Hi, my name is Takeshi “Nick” Osanai of Six Apart Ltd. Today, I’m going to post a translated blog article which was originally written by a Japanese Movable Type developer Sumio Noda. He is also known as his nickname “Junnama”. Sumio is a famous Movable Type developer in Japan. He is the co-founder and CEO of Alfasado Inc., one of the largest third-party developer in the worldwide Movable Type Community. Alfasado develops and distributes Enterprise plug-in packages that extend MT called “PowerCMS”. Alfasado also introduces a lot of plugins on Github. Take a look at Alfasdo’s account on Github, at https://github.com/alfasado to get an idea of what they have produced and made available to the MT community. So, let me introduce his blog entry “Reasons why I keep using Movable Type, not WordPress, because it’s fun!”…

Movable Type 5.13, 5.07, and 4.38 patch to fix the plugin template load error

By Jun Kaneko.

Note : This patch was updated on the 5th of March, 2012 after the initial release on the 1st of March. If you still see the “Template load error” after applying the initial patch, please download again and re-apply the patch. Thanks to the community feedback, we found an issue in Movable Type 5.13, 5.07, and 4.38 Security Updates and created a patch to resolve it. Due to the more strict policy in 5.13, 5.07 and 4.38, some plugins produce the “Template load error”. There are two ways to resolve this error: Fix your plugin to meet the security policy in 5.13 / 5.07 / 4.38. Apply the patch and enable AllowFileInclude configuration directive to moderate the strict security policy. It is recommended to (1) fix the plugin because AllowFileInclude weakens the protection against malicious plugins and templates. Please do not forget to disable AllowFileInclude directive once you update your plugin to the fixed version. Please refer to the following pages for details. Movable Type 5.13, 5.07, and 4.38 patch 1 release notes How to apply the patch How to fix your plugin If you are not seeing this “Template load error” after your upgrade, you don’t need to apply…

Session Hijack and CSRF exist in the commenting and the community script. A remote attacker could hijack the user session or could execute arbitrary script code on victim’s browser under the certain circumstances. XSS exists in templates where the variables are not escaped properly. A remote attacker could inject client-side script into web pages viewed by other users. XSS exists in mt-wizard.cgi. This vulnerability was reported by Trustwave (TWSL2012-003) Solution Please upgrade to the latest versions of Movable Type 4 or Movable Type 5.
