Introducing SAY Media: Good news for advertisers and publishers
By Chris Ernest Hall.
Those of you who’ve followed us over the years have seen us through a number of changes as Six Apart, and the industry we helped to create, has evolved. What started with a simple goal to make creating and publishing content for the web easy, became a social publishing platform that today powers some of the biggest brands on the web, as well as passionate individuals—those of us who simply want to express ourselves, share our expertise or insights, and reach an audience of like-minded others. Six Apart helped empower people and companies to publish. And they did. With amazing content they created valuable publishing properties with massive and engaged audiences—the influential audiences that advertisers want to reach. Over the past several years we have grown another side of our business, Six Apart Media, which has focused on helping publishers turn their passions into businesses and on helping marketers authentically engage these publishers and their audiences. Today Six Apart announced its intention to join forces with VideoEgg to form a modern media company called SAY Media. The new entity will combine the engagement platform and insights of VideoEgg with our social publishing platform, conversational marketing tools, and robust network of…

How to make Movable Type (even) Better…
By Maarten Schenk and posted in Community.
Movable Type has been Open Source since 2007. This means that if you want it to have some new functionality or if you feel some existing feature could be improved, in theory you could just write some perl code and get it done. At least if you are a programmer. But what if you are not? No luck?On the contrary! The Movable Type engineering team at Six Apart is constantly looking for feedback and feature ideas. Many of Movable Type’s current features came about as a result of user feedback, and there is no reason why that should ever change. So how do you contact these guys? The easiest way is to use the Movable Type issue tracking system, which you can use to report bugs or request features. This system is used directly by the development team to collect, prioritize and track the various changes and improvements that go into each version of Movable Type.Besides being able to submit bugs and feature requests you can also opt to get e-mail notifications when something happens to them, and you can even react to comments made by the development team if (for example) they need clarification on something.Sounds complicated? Not at all: there…

A Movable Type Hackathon in Europe?
By Maarten Schenk and posted in Events.
In the past there have been get-togethers for Movable Type enthusiasts in New York, San Francisco, Tokyo… but none in Europe yet! There has recently been some discussion about this on various mailing lists and several people indicated they would be interested in coming to or helping out at such an event. In the hopes of making it easier to make this a reality, I have set up a wiki page on the Movable Type wiki where all European Movable Type enthusiasts can indicate their interest and/or offer to help. Suggestions for topics and activities are welcome too (and of course non-European Movable Type users as well)….

Movable Type 5.02
By Maarten Schenk and posted in MT5.
Movable Type 5.02 was released by Six Apart today. This is strictly a bugfix release without new features. It contains fixes for a number of issues including one security vulnerability. It is highly recommended that all users of Movable Type 5.x upgrade their installations, especially the ones with multiple users. Details about the issues that were fixed can be found in the release notes. You may note that the release notes are unusually long this time: the focus of this release was on fixing as many bugs and issues as possible before working on new features for the coming releases (we will tell you more about these soon). We would like to thank everybody in the Movable Type community who submitted bug reports, feature requests and other feedback. Your efforts have made this release possible! Open Sourcing GeoType, PostOffice, CAS, BuildTracer
By Natalie Podrazik.
Hi all, We’ve open sourced a few more plugins, and they’re all available in the Six Apart Github repository! GeoType allows you to associate GoogleMap data with an entry. Each map extends the MT Asset framework, so it’s managed similar to uploaded images or documents, and associated to an entry in the exact same way. PostOffice enables blog posting via email. You may have been following along in MTOS earlier this week about this one, Brad Choate made a lot of handy fixes. CentralAuthenticationService allows you to configure MT to delegate user authentication to a CAS server in place of the built-in native authentication scheme. BuildTracer benchmarks statically-published templates and provides a visual display of how long it takes each tag to publish. It’s originally by Akira and available on his site, but we’ve been updating it in Github to match the latest builds of MT. Since we’re releasing these plugins as open-source and they’re not officially supported by Six Apart, we invite the community to improve upon them. Anyone and everyone is welcome to follow and contribute to the projects’ Github repositories. Enjoy!…

Considering an MT 4 Upgrade? Review the Movable Type 4.33 Changelog
By Dave Aiello.
About two weeks ago, Six Apart release Movable Type 4.33, a release that was coordinated with the worldwide release of Movable Type 5.01 and Movable Type 4.27-ja for Movable Type 4 users in Japan. I urge any customers planning to stay on Movable Type 4 for the near future to take another look at the Movable Type 4.33 Release Notes and to pay close attention to the following improvements: Security Fixes There are two significant security fixes that were included in Movable Type 4.33. The first is the closing of a series of vulnerabilities in the Content Management System (the Movable Type administrative user interface) where user privileges weren’t properly checked. Until Movable Type 4.33, unprivileged users could access several functions of the CMS by typing their URLs directly. We also enhanced the Asset Manager, XML-RPC Server, and Atom Server to make them check the content of image files that are being uploaded. If image files contain JavaScript or HTML unexpectedly, they can be used to attempt to exploit flaws in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 that could lead to security issues on the visitor’s PC or on servers to which that visitor has access. New Configuration Directive Related…
