Note: Please remember, MT4 is currently in beta and as a result has many known problems. It is not recommended anyone install this in a production environment.

Welcome to Movable Type Getting Started Guide. This guide takes users through the process of installing and getting Movable Type setup for the first time. Before you begin, it is important to make sure that you have all that you need in order to get started and that all your prerequisites have been met.

Prerequisites

  1. Make sure you are running on a supported server platform. While Six Apart supports a number of different operating systems including many flavors or Windows and Macintosh, for the purposes of this document, we recommend installing Movable Type on any flavor of Unix or Linux. Basically Movable Type runs on virtually any Unix system because every Unix system comes with Perl installed by default.
  2. Make sure you are running a supported Web Server. Again, Six Apart supports a number of different web servers, but for the purposes of this document we recommend the use of Apache because it is free, widely available and has tons of excellent support and resources.
  3. Make sure you have access to a supported database. While Six Apart supports a number of different database platforms, we recommend MySQL for most as it is the most common freely available database available. Movable Type requires MySQL version 4.0 or greater. If you have an older version of MySQL, consider upgrading. Make special note of:
    • Your database server name (often this is "localhost" but in a variety of hosting environments, this may be another fully qualified domain name).
    • Your database username and password.
    • The name of the database that will be used to store of all of Movable Type's information. If you don't know what that is, please consult our Database Setup Guide.
  4. Make sure you have access to an FTP client, or someway to upload files to your server. If you do not know if you have the right software to do this, ask your web hosting provider. They will be able to help you get the information you need to access your account using FTP.
