Granting Permissions to a User

Granting permissions to a user is reserved for System Administrators and Blog Administrators. A permission is the combination of a user with a role and a blog. It is only by creating permissions that users gain blog-level capabilities.

Granting Permissions to a User as a System Administrator

System administrators can grant permissions to users on one or more blogs at a time through the System Overview section of Movable Type.

  • Switch to the System Overview area of Movable Type by clicking on the blog selection menu and choosing “System Overview.”

  • Click Manage > Users from the System Overview’s main menu. This will open a listing of all users that exist in your system.

  • Locate the user you wish to grant permissions to and click on their username. This will open Edit Profile screen for that user.

  • Switch to the list of permissions that are currently granted to that user by clicking on the Permissions link in the left-hand navigation of the Edit Profile Screen. This will open the Permissions listing screen for that user.

  • To grant a permission on a blog to the user, locate and click on the “Grant permission” link at the top of the screen. This will open the Grant Permission wizard.

  • The first screen of the Grant Permission wizard will ask you to select one or more roles you wish to assign the user on a blog. Select roles by clicking on the checkboxes next to the role name. When you have selected the roles you wish to assign to the user, click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the wizard. This will take you to the second screen of the Grant Permission wizard.

  • The second screen of the Grant Permission wizard will ask you to select one or more blogs to which you wish to assign the user your previously selected role(s). (Note that you can search for a particular blog using the search box at the top of the wizard, which is helpful if your Movable Type installation has many blogs.) Select blogs by clicking on the checkboxes next to the blog name. When you have selected the blogs you wish to assign the user to (with the roles you selected in the prior screen), click the “Confirm” button at the bottom of the wizard.

When you confirm your selection, Movable Type will grant permissions for those users based on the roles and blogs you selected.

Granting Permissions to a User as a Blog Administrator

Blog administrators can add users to the blog they’re working on through the Manage > Users screen.

  • When working in one of your blogs, select Manage > Users from Movable Type’s main menu. This will open the Manage Users screen.

  • Locate and click on the “Add a user to this blog” link at the top of the screen. This will open the Grant Permissions wizard for the blog.

  • The first screen of the Grant Permissions wizard will ask you to locate and select the user(s) you wish to add to your blog. (Note that you can search for a particular user using the search box at the top of the wizard, which is helpful if your Movable Type installation has many users.) Select a user (or multiple users) by clicking on the checkbox(es) next to the user name. When you have selected the user(s) you wish to add to your blog, click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the wizard.

  • The second screen of the Grant Permissions wizard will ask you to select the role you wish to assign to that user on your blog. Select a role (or multiple roles) by clicking on checkboxes next to the role name. When you have selected the roles you wish to assign the user on your blog, click the “Confirm” button at the bottom of the wizard.

When you confirm your selection, Movable Type will grant permissions for the user(s) based on the role(s) you selected.
